Martin Saint-Germain Lauren’s playing with such softness and subtlety throughout the album, but in Sproileag it is even more delightful to the ears in my opinion. The slow tempo tunes are creating room to explore different sounds and techniques. I love it. Favorite track: Sproileag.

David Evens Achingly beautiful fiddle playing. Favorite track: Mo Chràdhghal Bochd.

Master of Alchemy Landskein is an intimate collection of instrumental folk arrangements. A few have a drone backing accompaniment, perhaps a harmonium. Four of the compositions have a piano accompaniment. The album was recorded at Abriachan Village Hall, a venue which has enabled the mics to pick up every detail and nuance of the fiddle and viola. Favorite track: 'Ial, Ial', Ars' a' Chailleach / Bodachan a' Ghàrraidh.

Lauren MacColl is considered one of Scotland’s most expressive fiddle players.

Her latest album, LANDSKEIN, composed of almost entirely solo traditional airs, is an uncompromising and rare delight. Bold in its simplicity, the only addition to MacColl’s fiddle is the subtle, sensitive accompaniment of pianist James Ross. Recorded ‘on location’ in Abriachan village hall, high in the hills above Loch Ness – a space known for its fine acoustics – this recording distils the finest qualities of Highland fiddle music – at times haunting, enchanting, enlivening.

The title LANDSKEIN suggests a thread or yarn in which the lifelines of a landscape, people, stories and memories are richly intertwined. The central thread traces the lifeline of MacColl herself, making her homeward journey to the Highlands, finding her place, awakening her senses in the hills and reconnecting with the taproot of the tradition that nurtured her.

Extended sleeve notes and an accompanying essay ‘Landskein and the Other Landscape’, written by ethnologist Mairi McFadyen can be found at laurenmaccoll.co.uk
